Taking Care of Business

     Recently, we road-tripped to Tangier in order to access the ferry to Spain. We had a great trip to the land of pork and Ikea; however, the entire road-tripping experience while being pregnant made us realize how important it is to plan our bathroom breaks more intentionally. Reflecting on this trip, we just spent the last few hours (during our hot chocolate and donut date) laughing hysterically about the various “classifications” of public restrooms in Morocco. We thought you’d enjoy the laugh too…

The Throne

     You are all familiar with this one. The porcelain “Throne”, which includes a sturdy seat, is set at the perfect level so that you can truly rest while relieving yourself.

The Pot

    “The Pot” resembles “The Throne” in its porcelain structure. The only difference is that the sturdy seat is partially or fully removed, resulting in a cold reception.

The Squatty

     Perhaps the most common in Morocco, “The Squatty” consists of a ground-level porcelain cap over an open drain hole. There are two, slightly-raised porcelain areas designed for proper feet placement as you squat.  The overall cleanliness of “The Squatty” varies wildly, and this contributes greatly to their tolerability.

The Hole

     “The Hole” lacks the dignity that the porcelain cap lends to “The Squatty”. This is truly just a hole dug into the ground for your minimal convenience.

The Leaner

     When using “The Leaner”, one enters a large room attached to small area with a raised lip. This smaller area may have once been a ”Squatty”, a closet, or a shower.  One approaches as closely to the smaller area as their sense of smell, or the contents of the floor, will allow.  The victims then must lean in the general direction of the small area in order to relieve themselves. “The Leaner” is not recommended for female use.

The Tree

     When all else fails, nature has your back(side).
